A wide variety of Britannia coins is available in several sizes and metals. Modern releases in the Proof Britannia series have seen talented Royal Mint engravers create special designs of Lady Britannia to appeal to coin collectors.
History of Britannia
Lady Britannia made her first appearance on Roman coins in AD 119 during the Roman era under the rule of Emperor Hadrian but disappeared after the collapse of the Roman Empire. She reappeared during the reign of King Charles II, and Britannia has since featured on every subsequent British monarch.
Obverse
The obverse of the coins features the uncrowned portrait of King Charles III by Martin Jennings.
Reverse
The reverse of the 2026 Proof Britannia coin was designed by Emily Damstra. Lady Britannia can be seen holding her shield and trident, with a steady gaze outwards to sea as the waves crash behind her. There is an inscription along the lower edge of the coin face that reads:
MAJESTY, JUSTICE AND PEACE
