Centenary of Paris Olympic Games 1924
Paris 2024 marks the centenary of the 1924 Summer Olympics in Paris and the first Winter Olympics in Chamonix, France, also in 1924. This was the sixth time France hosted the Olympic Games, with three Summer and three Winter Olympics, and the first time since 1924 that the Summer Olympics returned to Paris.
Similarly, to mark the centenary of the 1908 London Olympic Games, The Royal Mint issued the 2008 Olympic Centenary £2 coins, available in gold proof and silver proof editions.
Paralympics Founded in the United Kingdom
The Paralympics originated in the United Kingdom, thanks to Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a neurologist at Stoke Mandeville Hospital in Aylesbury, England. In 1948, Dr. Guttmann organised the Stoke Mandeville Games, a competition for World War II veterans with spinal cord injuries. This event is considered the forerunner to the Paralympic Games, which officially commenced in Rome in 1960.
Blackpool Olympic & Paralympic Athletes
